The grave of Prof Alexander Roberts, St Andrews Cathedral churchyard The Rev Prof Alexander Roberts DD (12 May 1826 – 8 March 1901) was a 19th-century Scottish biblical scholar. Life [ edit] Born at Marykirk, Kincardineshire, on 12 May 1826, he was the son of Alexander Roberts, a flax-spinner, and his wife, Helen Stuart. He was educated at the grammar school and King's College, Aberdeen, where he graduated MA in March 1847, being the Simpson Greek prizeman. [1] From 1849 to 1851 he trained as a minister of the Free Church of Scotland at New College, Edinburgh. [2] Roberts was minister of the Free Church in Stonehaven from 1852 to 1857. In 1857 he was translated to the Free Scots Church in Carlton Hill in London. In 1864 he was awarded an honorary doctorate, Doctor of Divinity by Edinburgh University. He was also minister at St. John's Wood, and was a member of the New Testament revision company (1870–84). In 1871, he succeeded John Campbell Shairp as Professor of Humanity at the University of St. Andrews.

I found many of their focuses quite intresting, i. e. the purpose of bathing. :) I would recommend.. Due to insomnia this collection of brilliant books was a perfect companion for me. I was able to get my hands on only 9 Volumes out of ten, but even that way, it was very interesting to read. It gives a good Historical overview, is written in a way that is not to hard to understand and keeps you interested. May be it is not such a good idea to read it all at ones, give yourself a break and take your time. May be choose and pick if you are interested in a specific topic and/or know what exactly y.. This is the American reprint of the Edinburgh Edition by A. Cleveland Coxe. This is a great research book, if you read it cover to cover you might get lost, but if you know what you are looking for and grounded in the truth, this is a great book to peruse.

As a Baptist taking tentative steps toward the Catholic Church, the first theological domino to fall, for me, was two thousand years of consistent, adamant, historical Church teaching on the Eucharist. I accepted Eucharistic teaching immediately upon the testimony of the Scriptures and the Church Fathers. The historical interpretation of John 6, to which I had never before been exposed, seemed painfully obvious as soon as I heard it! As Pope Leo XIII stated in his encyclical "On the Study of Holy Scripture": "The Holy Fathers, we say, are of supreme authority, whenever they all interpret in one and the same manner any text of the Bible, as pertaining to the doctrine of faith or morals; for their unanimity clearly evinces that such interpretation has come down from the Apostles as a matter of Catholic faith" ( Providentissimus Deus, 38). Also, Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman stated: "We receive those doctrines which they thus teach, not merely because they teach them, but because they bear witness that all Christians everywhere then held them" (John Henry Newman on Antichrist in the Church Fathers, 45).

One of the most heated attackers of heresy, he en.. Ante-Nicene works subtitled "The Writings of the Fathers Down to A. D. 325" – about 11. 000 pages. The collection of books consists of 10 volumes (the last volume is the index) containing English translations of the majority of Early Christian writings. The period covers the beginning of Christianity until before the promulgation of the Nicene Creed at the First Council of Nicaea. The translations are very faithful, but sometimes rather old-fashioned to read, but they are rewarding. These translat.. Blame Hugh Nibley, but I love studying early Christian history. What I'm trying to do is formulate some structure of the early Church, and even schismatic groups that sprung up along the way. Difficult with what is left after realizing we don't have all that is written anymore, and the one who wins tells the history. I like to see their interpretations of the resurrection, ordinances, etc. and how they would handle questions I have of other faiths.
