His story: Iain Douglas-Hamilton, 73, zoologist Photograph: Save the Elephants I was in the middle of the bush, giving the most crucial seminar of my career, when Saba decided to make an appearance. We hopped into an aeroplane, then into another aeroplane, and we beat the setting sun into Nairobi. My wife needed a caesarean section, and it was a question of whether we could find a doctor and get it together, but in the end we did. I'm sure every first-time father says the same thing, but it was the greatest day of my life. At times we worried about Saba growing up in the bush. She didn't go to school until she was seven, which was quite unusual at the time, but we believed that there was something very special about growing up close to wildlife, so whether she liked it or not that's what she had to do. She met her first elephant when she was just a babe in arms, a few weeks old – it put its trunk out and sniffed her. Saba was always very sympathetic with people, especially those who were unhappy or in trouble.

When we talk, following her nomination as Pioneer of the Year in the 2019 Revolut Everywoman in Travel Awards, Saba doesn't mince her words. "I don't do frontline anti-poaching, I don't do the hard scientific work or any of that stuff. I'm a communicator, " she says. "I connect people and use elephants as a symbol of what's happening environmentally on a much bigger scale". Okay, she's no scientist, but so far she's proven more effective than the hadron collider in producing feats of nuclear fusion, with radiation felt across the globe. Fashion, in particular, has proven an unlikely but fruitful pairing for the Elephant Watch Camp. One of her most successful collaborations started as a conversation over lunch. "This couple from New York came to stay [at Elephant Watch Camp]. They had no idea who we were and vice versa, but we just clicked. It turned out that this guy was David Bonnouvrier who owned a model agency in New York. He and his partner, the ex-supermodel Trish Goff, wanted to help somehow.

[4] Marriage and children [ edit] In February 2006, Saba married conservationist and journalist Frank Pope in a traditional Kenyan ceremony. [5] They live in a rustic house outside Nairobi that borders the famous Rothschild's Giraffe Sanctuary. They have three daughters: Selkie (born in March 2009) [3] and younger twins Mayin and Luna. [6] Charity work [ edit] When she returned to Africa from her studies in the UK she worked for the Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia, mentored by conservationist Blythe Loutit. Based in Samburu National Reserve in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya, Save the Elephants carries out detailed long-term monitoring of the local elephant population, and deploys sophisticated elephant tracking techniques there and across the continent.

This book has a touch of everything in it. With her incredible knowledge about elephants, she shares some enchanting stories and facts about elephants that are hard to find without spending years with these wonderful creatures. I highly reading this book as it opens a window into the life of one of the most amazing elephant researchers working to teach us more about the hidden life of the elephant. Keepers of the Ark: an Elephants' View of Captivity by R. J. Ryan R J. Ryan details the abuse that is inherent in keeping Elephants captive in a Zoo type setting. He shares his first hand experience as an employees at an Elephant program in San Diego Wild Animal Park.

If you can get this book I highly recommend reading it. Battle for the Elephants by Iain & Oria Douglas-Hamilton This is one of the most insightful books I have read about the elephants situation within the world from the 60s - 90s. It gives an inside story of Iain and Oria Douglas-Hamilton's work in batting to save sad massacre of elephants for their body parts, flesh and most of all Ivory. This is a dramatic story that simply must be read by every elephant lover! Although the tale was sad in its scope, the substance and value of this masterpiece is vital for considering the survival of the elephant. If you can find this book, don't pass up the chance to read this story to educate yourself about the plight of the elephant. Oria's parents, Mario Rocco and Giselle Bunau-Varilla, arrived from Italy and France in 1928 to hunt elephants in what was then the Belgian Congo. They walked for a year, moving camp whenever they felt the urge to explore another part of the country. When Giselle fell pregnant with their first child, Doriano, the couple set off on foot from what is now Rwanda towards Lake Victoria with sixty porters shouldering their life's possessions. They piled their boxes onto a steamboat, crossed the lake and took a carriage on the Lunatic Express across Kenya, finally ending their journey in Naivasha, where they bought a farm on the lake's northern shoreline. There they built Sirocco House, a renowned piece of French Art Deco architecture, where their daughters Mirella and Oria were born. Their idyllic childhood, and the stories the family told on their return to Paris, are said to have inspired Giselle's cousin, Jean de Brunhoff, to pen his famous children's books on Babar the Elephant King. Oria's sister, Mirella Ricciardi, is a celebrated photographer who has published several books on Africa.
